Storm and Disaster Preparedness
BEFORE AND DURING DISASTER:
REMAIN INDOORS – Do not go outside unless absolutely necessary.
If your power starts to Fluctuate or goes out, turn OFF the main breaker. Proceed to turn off all the circuits except the circuit for the lights. Make sure you have a light in the “ON” position so you will know power has been restored. Put the main breaker back in the “ON” position.
If you are to operate a portable generator, turn off the main breaker to prevent back feeding the island system.
AFTER THE DISASTER:
In the even of a Typhoon, visually check you weather head and electric meter for any damage or the presence of water inside. (for either problem you must have an electrician make the repairs and DPW inspect them before GPA can restore your power).
Report any down lines, transformers, and/or poles in your area – Do not try to pick them up or move them. Call GPA’s Dispatch center.
When the power has been restored, turn on individual switches one at a time – this makes it easier to located and internal problems, if any.
POWER OUTAGES:
If you think you are experiencing a power outage (due to typhoons, earthquakes, or other reasons), check the following before you call.
- Is the whole house out of power?
- Check Circuit breakers/fuses
- Are the neighbors out of power?
- Are street lights out?
- Do you see a tree limb on a line or a down line?
- Is a power pole damaged?
When you call to report a power outage, please be prepared with the following information:
- Your phone number
- Your name
- Location of the outage
- Description of the problem
After reporting the outage
- Turn off all electrical equipment
- Leave an outside light turned on (so the repair crew will know the service has been restored)
- Turn off the circuit breaker to your water heater
- Turn off and unplug other electrical equipment including:
- VCR’s
- Refrigerator
- Washer & Dryer
- Stereo
- TV Sets
- Microwave Oven
This will help reduce the initial demand for electricity when the power is restored, which, if too great, will overload the system and cause the power to go off again. It will also protect your equipment from possible voltage fluctuations. Do not turn equipment on again until lights have returned to their normal brightness.
