Outdoor Electrical Safety Tips
- Keep outdoor outlets and electrical products covered and dry between uses.
- When working outdoors, use only weather resistant heavy gauge extension cords marked “for outdoor use”.
- Be sure amperage ratings of extension cords are higher than those of electrical equipment to be used. Turn off equipment if the cord overheats.
- Children should not to climb trees that are close to power lines.
- Keep ladders, antennas, kites, balloons, model airplanes, and trees away from overhead power lines.
- If you have a problem with objects coming in contact with the power lines, call your electric utility company's Service Center/Dispatch office.
- Before digging, learn the location of underground power lines. Call your electric utility company or assistance.
WATER AND ELECTRICITY DON’T MIX:
- Don’t leave plugged-in appliances where they might come in contact with water.
- If a plugged-in appliance falls into water, NEVER reach in to pull it out – even if it’s turned off.
- First turn off the power source at the panel board and then unplug the appliance.
- If you have an appliance that has gotten wet, don’t use it until it has been checked by a qualified repair person.
SUBSTATIONS:
The high voltage equipment in substations is very dangerous, for people untrained in its use. Substations are fenced, and gates are locked, to prevent entry by unauthorized and untrained persons. Please advise your children and other family members of this danger. In the event a ball or toys become “trapped” in a substation, call our emergency number. We will get it for you.
